Some evenings feel like glitter in the air. Our Valentine’s Day event at Unwind at the Cope Center for Autism was one of those nights.

Families traveled from near and far, some driving for over an hour, not quite sure what to expect. They walked into a space filled with warmth, conversation, and thoughtfully designed activity zones that invited tweens and teens to explore, create, and connect at their own pace. And then something beautiful happened.

Organic Social Moments

Tweens and teens who had never met before were talking. Laughing. Sitting side by side for activities. Jumping into shared interests.

Not every interaction lasted all night. Some were short and sweet. A few minutes of conversation about a favorite show. A quick moment during an activity. A shared joke. But those small exchanges are powerful. They are practicing. They are progressing. They are quietly building confidence.

At Unwind, we believe social growth doesn’t need to be forced. It can be gently invited.

Inclusion with Support

For participants who needed a little more support, parents stepped in seamlessly. Some stayed close. Some prompted conversations. Some helped with introductions. And what we loved most was that it never felt separate or different. It felt like a community.

Everyone was included in the festivities.
Everyone had a place at the table.
Everyone was part of the celebration.

That balance of independence and support is something we intentionally cultivate. We want participants to stretch but never feel overwhelmed. We want families to feel welcomed, not sidelined.

A Space Designed with Intention

One parent shared:

“We walked into a beautiful center with great spaces set up to support young adults like my son, while allowing them to dive into their high-interest areas and practice social skills with other kids who face similar challenges.”

That reflection means everything to us. Unwind is not just an after-school program. It is a structured, yet flexible environment designed to:

  • Encourage authentic peer interaction
  • Honor high-interest areas as bridges to connection
  • Provide sensory-considerate spaces
  • Allow for natural skill practice without pressure

And on Valentine’s night, it all came together.

More Than a Party

Yes, there were decorations.
Yes, there were themed activities.
Yes, there was plenty of laughter.

But what made the night special was watching tweens and teens feel comfortable enough to be themselves. Watching families relax. Watching parents connect with other parents who “get it.”

It was more than a party. It was a hangout. A community moment. A reminder that inclusive spaces matter. We are so grateful to every family who joined us, and to those who traveled such distances to be part of the evening. Your trust fuels our mission.

If this was your first Unwind experience, welcome. If you’ve been with us before, thank you for continuing to grow alongside us. And if you’re reading this, wondering what Unwind is all about… just imagine a room where social skills feel less like work and more like possibility.
